To paddle into a heavy a wave that’s what surfing is really about for me. This is where my passion for surfing lies.

Don’t get me wrong, tow surfing has opened so many doors; it has allowed us to ride waves I could only dream of surfing and for that its an amazing tool. But when you paddle into a good wave – that’s when you really feel alive.

To paddle into heavy waves is no small task. Add in the weather we have to deal with in Ireland, and it makes paddling into heavy waves a real challenge. Most of the heavy waves here have only been surfed for a few years, so the limits of what is possible are being tested on every good swell. This makes for very challenging and exciting surfing, and its where my passion lies strongest.

Hi my name is Fergal Smith. I grew up on an organic vegetable farm outside a town called Westport in Co Mayo. I now live in County Clare. I was lucky enough that our family had a caravan on Achill island and this is where we spent our weekends throughout the summer. My Dad gave surfing a try and as soon as he let myself and my brother Kevin have a go that was it.We didn’t grow up on a beach so just getting to go surfing was a real buzz. Still now having the freedom to surf where I please and living close to the ocean I feel truly lucky. I love living in Ireland, its hard work to surf those rare good days but the waves we have on offer more than pay you back for your effort.

My main goal is to learn how to surf heavy waves as best and functionally as possible and help push the level of surfing.

The idea of my website is to give anyone who is interested an idea of what is really going on in heavy waves here.
